FAQ - Frequently Asked questions

1. Does the new class from 4/13 replace existing online classes?

Answer: Yes. This is based on inputs from many parents and upcoming FCPS online classes.

2. Is the tuition $100/class for every 2 weeks?

Answer: Yes. we designed this bi-weekly frequency to best suit each and every child's needs. If you registered for more than 2 weeks, you can pay all at once. Please see invoice.

3. Can I register a class for only 4 days or 3 days?

Answer: No. We believe one-hour per subject daily Mon ~ Friday will build solid foundation for every students, be it in Chinese, English, Math, NNAT or CoGAT. So all the sessions are 5-day session. This also enable teachers to have consistent momentum in teaching the students day in day out. If you can only attend, say, 4 days, we encourage you still enroll in Mulan for maximum learning benefits.

4. My kid needs to attend Chinese first grade and Cogat as rising 2nd grader for AAP. However, both

Answer: we tried to mix and match the timing for rising first grader to attend NNAT and rising 2nd grader to attend CoGAT. However, due to different Chinese language level for these students, there might be conflicts. Please register your primary class ,put your request in the form about the conflict, and/or send us an email for the conflict. We will urgently evaluate the total request and are open to offer more classes at different hours before and/or after the current schedules to suit most of the students.

5. How do you teach Chinese classes?

Answer: Mulan has been taught by experienced teachers. We utilize a 1+1 method: that is, 1 effort to teach the language, and 1 effort to lead students to use the language . We use 《阳阳中文》"Yangyang Chinese text book.  We teach students the vivid language in daily life with ample demos, practices, repetitions and fun activities. Our students participate in China's official HSK exam (Chinese Proficiency Exam) as benchmark twice a year. 4 students passed HSK Level 1 in 2019. The HSK exam for 2020 has been postponed to later in the year due to Covid-19.

6. How do you teach NNAT and CoGAT?

Answer: NNAT and CoGat are exams required in Virginia to be selected in AAP programs. In 2019, more than 95% of Mulan's students who participated in our NNAT and CoGAT sessions passed the entrance threshold and were selected into the pool. We utilize a teach+practice model: our teacher demo sample questions, students practice in the same session.

7. How do you teach math and reading?

Answer: We understand that students at public schools do not really have enough practice and perfection drills on math and reading. This is where Mulan comes in to help. We utilize IXL group practice for K-12 graders. Our teachers will assess each and every student's current level in math and reading, lead them to start at an easy and comfortable level, gradually guide them to more challenging level. Each student will be required to achieve 90% accuracy in each subject in math and reading  on their own pace before progressing to next level. This gives each child a solid foundation to progress from grade to grade (on their own pace), supplementing what they are lack of in FCPS.

8. Is there a minimum and maximum for each class?

Answer: Yes. Each class has a minimum of 3 students and maximum of 10 students. Mulan tries to make sure for a quality learning experience at an affordable tuition for the community.

9. The Chinese class is now only 1 hour per day. It used to be 2 hours per day. Why?

Answer: We heard inputs from many parents and evaluated online classes offered by public schools. Offering 2-hour class in Chinese daily will force some students to stay late if they need to also choose math, reading, NNAT and/or CoGAT. We believe that a student learning Chinese everyday one hour will see significant progress in several month. This is a feature for online class. When we switch to on-site class later when pandemic ends, we will switch back to 2-hour class, to suit many students who can only come to Mulan 2 or 3 times a week due to sports and other outdoor activities.
